It is difficult to summarize and convey all that Jim Alatis created and made possible at Georgetown University — all creations that I, like countless others, have benefited from. He was responsible for the creation of the sociolinguistics program, which thrives and is unique in the world of linguistics; and he turned the Georgetown University Round Table on Languages and Linguistics into the hugely influential international meeting that it is today.
He protected linguistics within the university, and protected and nurtured individual faculty members — again, including me. Above all, he was invariably kind, generous, and caring; I have missed him at Georgetown from the day he retired, and will always miss him and remember him with love and gratitude.
